eBay seller fees are not one flat percentage. The result depends on category, sale amount, account status, optional advertising, international terms, and the total amount of the order.

As of July 26, 2026, eBay’s US fee page lists 13.6% of the total sale up to $7,500 for most categories, then 2.35% on the portion above $7,500. Books, Movies & TV, and Music except Vinyl Records are listed at 15.3%. Exceptions apply, so verify the category and account terms shown for your listing in eBay’s official selling-fee guide.

What is included in the fee base?

eBay says the final value fee is calculated on the total amount of the sale. That can include the item price, handling, shipping collected from the buyer, sales tax, and other applicable fees. This is why multiplying the item price alone by a category rate can understate the charge.

The per-order fee is currently $0.30 for an order of $10 or less and $0.40 for an order over $10. eBay also provides up to 250 zero-insertion-fee listings per month, with exclusions and account-specific terms.

Illustrative $50 order

This simplified example assumes the most-categories 13.6% rate and a $50 total sale. It excludes tax and other adjustments:

ComponentAmount
Total sale used for example$50.00
Final value fee at 13.6%-$6.80
Per-order fee-$0.40
Amount after these eBay fees$42.80

That is not profit. Subtract the cost of goods, actual postage, packaging, returns, overhead, and any advertising fee. Use the eBay fee calculator for scenario planning and the actual order statement for bookkeeping. The marketplace fee comparison can screen the same item across representative models, but fee differences do not prove equal demand, eligibility, or time to sale.

Advertising changes the margin

eBay currently calls its strategies General and Priority campaigns. General can charge an ad fee after an attributed sale following an ad click within 30 days. Priority charges for valid clicks whether or not a purchase follows. Read the current advertising overview and calculate a margin-safe ceiling before accepting a suggested rate or click budget.

For the $50 illustrative order, an 8% General campaign fee would add $4.00, leaving $38.80 after the final value, order, and illustrative ad charges—before inventory and fulfillment costs.

Calculate true eBay profit

Use this structure for each sold item:

Net profit = revenue − marketplace fees − advertising − postage − packaging − cost of goods − allocated overhead − expected return cost

The true eBay profit guide shows a complete per-item workflow. Track actual fees rather than a category-wide estimate, especially when shipping, tax, promoted placement, or international charges are involved.

eBay versus Discogs

Discogs currently documents a 9% selling fee on the item and shipping amount. That does not make every Discogs order cheaper: payment, shipping, demand, sale price, time-to-sale, and return risk still matter. Compare the same item and shipping basket in the eBay versus Discogs guide.
